We find Beer-sheba visited by Abraham, who dug the well (<span class='bible'>Gen 21:31<\/span>); the place where Samuel&rsquo;s sons judged Israel (<span class='bible'>1Sa 8:2<\/span>); constituting, with Dan in the north, the established formula for the whole of the Promised Land &ldquo;Dan to Beer-sheba&rdquo; (<span class='bible'>2Sa 24:2<\/span>); the seat of an idolatrous worship in the time of Amos (<span class='bible'>Amo 5:5<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Amo 8:14<\/span>). It still retains as nearly as possible its ancient name, <em> Br-es-Seb<\/em>. There are at present two principal wells and five smaller ones. Of Amam we read nowhere else;<\/p>\n<p><strong>and Shema<\/strong> is thought by some to be the same with Sheba, though wrongly, given afterwards to the tribe of Simeon, as was also Moladah, mentioned with it, <span class='bible'>Jos 19:2<\/span>;<\/p>\n<p><strong>and Moladah<\/strong>; it is also spoken of in <span class='bible'>1Ch 4:28<\/span>, and seems to be the same with Malathi or Malatis, about twenty miles from Hebron f.<\/p>\n<p>f Vid. [This place was identified by Dr. Robinson. It has two wells about forty feet deep, and the ruins of a former city cover a space around of nearly half a mile square. It was inhabited again after the exile. <span class='bible'>Neh 11:26<\/span>. The sides of the wells are, according to Tristram, &ldquo;of hard marble, polished and deeply fluted all round by the ropes of the water drawers, perhaps for four thousand years.
