David obliged the Philistines to raise the siege of it; (see <span class='bible'>1Sa 23:1-13<\/span>\ud83d\ude09 but finding that its inhabitants had purposed to deliver him into the hands of Saul, who was coming in pursuit of him, he made his escape. See this remarkable case explained in the note on <span class='bible'>De 32:15<\/span>.<\/P> <P> <\/P> <P> <I><B>Mareshah<\/B><\/I>] Called also <I>Maresheth<\/I> and <I>Marasthi<\/I>; it was the birth-place of the prophet <I>Micah<\/I>. Near this place was the famous battle between Asa, king of Judah, and Zera, king of Cush or Ethiopia, who was at the head of one thousand thousand men, and three hundred chariots. The first of these is a well known city, which David saved from the hands of the Philistines, <span class='bible'>1Sa 23:1<\/span>, c. In Jerom&#8217;s time it was a little village to the east of Eleutheropolis, about eight miles from it, as you go to Hebron in which was shown the sepulchre of the Prophet Habakkuk b.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And Achzib<\/strong> is said to be on the borders of Asher, <span class='bible'>Jos 19:29<\/span>, and is supposed the same with Chezib, <span class='bible'>Ge 38:5<\/span>; and the Ecdippa of Josephus and others, and now called Zib; <span class='bible'>[See comments on Mic 1:14]<\/span>;<\/p>\n<p><strong>and Mareshah<\/strong>; Jerom says c, only the ruins of it were to be seen two miles from Eleutheropolis:<\/p>\n<p><strong>nine cities with their villages<\/strong>; which is just their number.<\/p>\n<p>b De loc. Its inhabitants were delivered from the oppression of the Philistines by David and his men, who afterwards for a time settled in the town. <span class='bible'>1Sa 23:1-13<\/span>. &ldquo;Eight Roman miles from the ancient Eleutheropolis, on the way to Hebron, is a large ruined tower or castle called <em> Kela. <\/em> It stands on a projecting cliff on the right bank of Wady-el-Feranj. There can be little doubt that this is the long lost Keilah.&rdquo; <em> Porter. <\/em> [ <strong> Achzib <\/strong> is probably identical with <em> Chezib, <\/em> (<span class='bible'>Gen 38:5<\/span>,) now Kusaba, fifteen miles southwest of Beit-jibrin. <strong> Mareshah <\/strong> is supposed by Robinson and Tobler to be the ruins called Marash, one mile and a half south of Beit-jibrin, on a gently-swelling hill leading down from the mountains to the great western plain.
