Of which see Jos 20:7<\/span>;<\/p>\n [to be] a city of refuge for the slayer<\/strong>; this is the fourth city of refuge mentioned:<\/p>\n and Hammothdor with her suburbs<\/strong>; the same with Hammon, 1Ch 6:76<\/span>; and with Hammath, Jos 19:35<\/span>; and is thought by some to be Tiberias, so called from the hot baths in or near it:<\/p>\n and Kartan with her suburbs<\/strong>; called Kirjathaim, 1Ch 6:76<\/span>; but cannot be the Kirjathaim in Nu 32:37<\/span>; for that belonged to the tribe of Reuben, and was on the other side Jordan:<\/p>\n three cities<\/strong>; this being a lesser tribe than some others gave fewer cities, according to the rule in Nu 35:8<\/span>.<\/p>\n ‘<\/strong> And out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with her suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Hammoth-dor with her suburbs, and Kartan with her suburbs. Three cities.’ <\/p>\n For Kedesh in Galilee see Jos 20:7<\/span>, for Hammoth-dor see Jos 19:35<\/span>, Hammath (‘hot springs’), which was just on the lower part of the western shore of the Sea of Galilee (Chinnereth) as it begins to narrow. They were probably the hot springs to the south of the later city of Tiberias. Kartan is not mentioned in the list of Naphtali’s cities. In 1Ch 6:76<\/span> it is Kiriathaim (meaning ‘two cities’). There was another Kiriathaim in Transjordan (Num 32:37<\/span>; Jer 48:1<\/span>; Jer 48:23<\/span>; Eze 25:9<\/span>). With only three levitical cities Naphtali is seen to be a smaller tribe. <\/p>\n Kedesh: Jos 19:37, Jos 20:7, 1Ch 6:76 <\/p>\n Hammothdor: Supposed by many to be the same as Tiberias; so called from the hot-baths, as the word Chammoth may denote, in its vicinity.
