Is there not somewhat which leads the mind to the contemplation of the Spirit’s work upon the heart, in this direction concerning the sound of a going in the mulberry trees? The Holy Ghost, in his descent upon the minds of the apostles, came down in the sound of a mighty rushing wind. And what is it now? The taking of the things of Jesus and showing them to the people. Depend upon it, reader! it is the work of the Holy Ghost, when at any time your heart is led to see and feel your need of Jesus; his fulness, and all-sufficiency to supply; and you are secretly inclined to come unto him. So we read, Rev 20:9, of the enemies of the church going up on the breadth of the earth. But the wider they spread themselves, the fairer mark they are for Gods arrows. And when David inquired of the Lord Though he had been successful before, yet he would attempt nothing further without Gods direction; to whom he knew he owed his former victory. The sound of marching in the treetops among which the Israelites took cover (wind?) would be the sign that the Lord was going before his army to strike the enemy (2Sa 5:24; cf. Act 2:2). The name "Gibeon" replaces "Geba" in the text in the parallel account of this battle (1Ch 14:16). Gibeon is probably correct. If David pursued the Philistines through the Aijalon valley, he probably went through Gibeon northwest of Jerusalem rather than Geba to the northeast. Gezer stood in the Shephelah 14 miles west of Gibeon on the Philistine border.

These victories cleared the Philistines from the hill country of Judah and Benjamin, and made it possible for David to establish a secure capital in Jerusalem. Had he not defeated them, his reign would have gotten off to a much weaker start. Saul had also begun his reign by defeating the Philistines (1 Samuel 7).

"In the present context 2Sa 5:17-25 depict two encounters between David and the Philistines, which apparently brought to an end the Philistine domination of Palestine (see also 2Sa 8:1). In view of the book as a whole, it seems that the war with the Philistines was more prolonged, but the editor had chosen only these two select illustrations to sketch the main course of events. Perhaps, just as Israel had been defeated twice by the Philistines (1 Samuel 4, 31) so also the Philistines were twice routed by David." [Note: Ibid., p. 94.]

Fuente: Expository Notes of Dr. Constable (Old and New Testaments)

And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.
