And here the issue of that marriage suffers the punishment. If parents would but consider how much their conduct operates upon the future circumstances of their children, what a check might this sometimes prove, to keep back from presumptuous sins. The friendship and the loves of David and Jonathan, are sweetly kept up. Reader! the sacrifice here made is a solemn history. And, no doubt, it being recorded, was with a view to say as much. But, do not fail to keep a steady eye upon the hand of GOD in it. This reconciles all we meet with in otherwise questionable cases. And surely, far better that the house of Saul, in every department of which it is said to be bloody, should perish, than that all Israel should be famished: Even Caiaphas could say it was better that one man should die for the people, than that the nation should perish. Joh 11:50 . David’s justice and mercy 21:7-9

David showed himself to be a true son of Yahweh by keeping his covenant with Jonathan and by sparing Mephibosheth (cf. 2Sa 21:2; 1Sa 18:3; 1Sa 20:8; 1Sa 20:16). However, he followed God’s Law and executed seven of Saul’s descendants including another Mephibosheth, Saul’s son (2Sa 21:8). "Merab" (2Sa 21:8) is the correct name of another of Rizpah’s sons. "Michal," the name that appears in the AV, is probably a scribal error (cf. 1Sa 18:19; 2Sa 6:23). [Note: Driver, p. 352.] David could justly slay Saul’s descendants if they had had a part in the execution of the Gibeonites. This seems to have been the case (2Sa 21:1; cf. Eze 18:4; Eze 18:20). The execution took place in Gibeah, Saul’s former home and capital, which was on a hill ("mountain," 2Sa 21:9) of Benjamin. The barley harvest began in late March or early April when the feast of Passover took place. Since Passover memorialized the Israelites’ liberation from oppression in Egypt, this was an appropriate time for this event. By getting things right with the Gibeonites, David brought Israel out from under God’s oppression that Saul’s sin had caused.

Fuente: Expository Notes of Dr. Constable (Old and New Testaments)

But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD’s oath that [was] between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul. 7. the Lord’s oath ] See 1Sa 18:3; 1Sa 20:12-17; 1Sa 20:42; 1Sa 23:18.
