It was a messenger from Jehovah which led these prophets astray. We are not to conclude from this that it was an evil spirit, or Satan, as some have suggested. Such spirits are not God’s agents. The spirit which here wrought the evil did but foster the false notions which a long course of previous warnings had had no effect in driving away. Now therefore Ahab is given up to them. God sends him ‘a strong delusion, that he should believe a lie’ (2Th 2:11). Is it requisite again to remind the reader that the Scriptures repeatedly represent God as doing what, in the course of his providence, he only permits or suffers to be done? Nothing can be done in heaven, in earth, or hell, but either by his immediate energy or permission. He very much saw God as the ‘first cause’ of everything, simply because He was sovereign over all things. He thus knew that in the end everything that happened was ‘God’s doing’. But the point was that that was because He had created man and was allowing him to live out what he was. He was allowing man’s behaviour within His sovereign purpose, not instigating it.

“God has spoken evil concerning you.” That is, through the false prophets He has allowed them to hear lies about the future (but has combated it by sending His true prophet).

 1Ki 22:24

‘ Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and smote Micaiah on the cheek, and said, “Which way went the Spirit of YHWH from me to speak to you?” ’

Infuriated at Micaiah’s suggestion that he was not a true prophet Zedekiah came near and struck Micaiah across the cheek. This was a regular way of indicating that such a person was not to be listened to and had spoken lies. (Compare how Jesus was struck across the cheek when replying to the High Priest – Joh 18:22). Then he called on Micaiah to justify his statement. Did he not realise that all, as they had watched, had been able to see that he, Zedekiah, had been ‘filled with the spirit of YHWH’ by his very behaviour and actions. Let Micaiah then explain how that spirit had passed on from him to Micaiah. There was nothing about Micaiah’s behaviour which indicated possession by such a spirit.

 1Ki 22:25

‘ And Micaiah said, “Behold, you will see on that day, when you shall go into an inner chamber to hide yourself.” ’

Micaiah’s reply was simple. The true evidence of the spirit of prophecy was that what was prophesied came about (Deu 18:22). Thus when Zedekiah had to go to his inner room in order to hide himself because of his shame at the failure of his own prophecy, (and knew that Micaiah had spoken truly) he would know the answer to his own question.

 1Ki 22:26

‘ And the king of Israel said, “Take Micaiah, and carry him back to Amon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king’s son,”

Ahab recognised that what Micaiah was saying would destroy the morale of the army and immediately commanded that he be held in custody. He was to be put in the charge of Amon the governor of the city, and of Joash the king’s son until Ahab arrived back safely. Ahab would have had a good number of sons by his many wives, all having their own royal duties to fulfil in different areas of government. Joash was clearly the son, possibly of a concubine, appointed to be seen as responsible for the safe custody of state prisoners.

Fuente: Commentary Series on the Bible by Peter Pett

1Ki 22:23 Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee.

Ver. 23. Now, therefore, behold the Lord. ] He hath not only a permissive but an active providence in the just punishment of wicked persons; turning the devil loose upon them, and leaving them to their own hearts’ lusts.

Fuente: John Trapp’s Complete Commentary (Old and New Testaments)

spoken: in 1Ki 22:17.

Fuente: Companion Bible Notes, Appendices and Graphics

the Lord: Exo 4:21, Exo 10:20, Deu 2:30, 2Ch 25:16, Isa 6:9, Isa 6:10, Isa 44:20, Eze 14:3-5, Eze 14:9, Mat 13:13-15, Mat 24:24, Mat 24:25

and the Lord: 1Ki 22:8-11, 1Ki 20:42, 1Ki 21:19, Num 23:19, Num 23:20, Num 24:13, Isa 3:11

Reciprocal: Jdg 9:23 – God Jdg 18:9 – are ye still 1Ki 12:15 – the cause 1Ki 22:6 – Go up 1Ki 22:21 – General 2Ch 18:23 – Zedekiah Job 1:12 – Behold Job 12:16 – the deceived Job 26:4 – whose spirit Jer 27:14 – they Jer 28:15 – The Lord Eze 22:25 – a conspiracy 1Ti 4:1 – seducing

Fuente: The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

1Ki 22:23. Now therefore, behold, the Lord hath put, &c. It is frequent in the Holy Scriptures to call that the Lords doing which he only permits to be done; because he has the supreme direction of all things, and governs the event. Wicked devices proceed from wicked men and wicked spirits: but, that they prevail and take effect, is owing to the hand of God directing and ordering when and where they shall light, and what shall be the issue of them. Hath put a lying spirit into the mouth, &c. Hath permitted a lying spirit to influence these men. Hath spoken evil concerning thee Hath decreed that thou shalt perish in this war. It may not be amiss to observe here, that the evil being, named Satan, was little known to the Jewish people till their captivity; and then this history was taught openly as a security against the doctrine of the two principles. The Jewish lawgiver, where he so frequently enumerates and warns the Israelites of the snares and temptations which would draw them to transgress the law of God, never mentions this capital enemy of heaven. Nay, when the form of that sacred history which Moses composed obliged him to treat of Satans first grand machination against mankind, he entirely hides this wicked spirit under the animal which he made his instrument; but, as the fulness of time drew near, they were made more and more acquainted with this their capital enemy. When Ahab, for the crimes and follies of the people, was suffered to be infatuated, we have the account in the words of Micaiah above. Satan is not here recorded by name; and so we must conclude the people were yet to know little of his history: however, this undertaking sufficiently declared his nature. Div.
