El término hace referencia a los sufrimientos debidos a la presión de las circunstancias, o al antagonismo de las personas (1Ts 3:4; 2Ts 1:6-7); «angosto» (Mat 7:14); «oprimiesen» (Mar 3:9); «atribulados» (2Co 1:6; 2Co 7:5); «afligidos» (1Ti 5:10); «angustiados» (Heb 11:37); «atribulados» (2Co 4:8). Tanto el verbo como el nombre (véase B, Nº 1), se refieren invariablemente, cuando se usa acerca de la presente experiencia del creyente, a lo que les viene de afuera.
