Crispus

(, for Lat. Crispus, curled; found also in the Talmudists under the forms and ), chief of the Jewish synagogue at Corinth (Act 18:8), converted and baptized by the apostle Paul (1Co 1:14) A.D. 50. According to tradition (Constitut. Apost. 7:46) he was afterwards bishop of AEgina. The Greek Church observe his festival on the 4th of October.

CRISPUS.The chief ruler of the Jewish synagogue at Corinth (Act 18:8). Convinced by the reasonings of St. Paul that Jesus was the Messiah, he believed with all his house. The Apostle mentions him (1Co 1:14) as one of the few persons whom he himself had baptized.

Crispus

krispus (, Krspos, curled): One of the small number baptized by Paul among the Corinthian Christians (1Co 1:14). He had been ruler of the Jewish synagogue, but he believed in the Lord with all his house; and, following Paul, withdrew from the synagogue (Act 18:7, Act 18:8). He seems to have been succeeded by Sosthenes (Act 18:17). According to tradition he became bishop of Aegina.
