See CONTINUE, TARRY. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n kata, “down” (intensive), and No. 1, is used in Act 1:13<\/span>. The word may signify “constant residence,” but more probably indicates “frequent resort.” In 1Co 16:6<\/span>, it denotes “to wait.” <\/p>\n<\/p>\n “to remain beside” (para, “beside”), “to continue near,” came to signify simply “to continue,” e.g., negatively, of the Levitical priests, Heb 7:23<\/span>. In Phi 1:25<\/span>, the Apostle uses both the simple verb meno and the compound parameno (some mss. have sumparameno), to express his confidence that he will “abide,” and “continue to abide,” with the saints. In 1Co 16:6<\/span> some mss. have this word. In Jam 1:25<\/span>, of steadfast continuance in the law of liberty. See CONTINUE. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n lit., “to abide under” (hupo, “under”), signifies “to remain in a place instead of leaving it, to stay behind,” e.g., Luk 2:43<\/span>; Act 17:14<\/span>; or “to presevere,” Mat 10:22<\/span>; Mat 24:13<\/span>; Mar 13:13<\/span>; in each of which latter it is used with the phrase “unto the end;” or “to endure bravely and trustfully,” e.g., Heb 12:2-3<\/span>, Heb 12:7<\/span>, suggesting endurance under what would be burdensome. Jdg 3:25<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n lit., “to wear through by rubbing, to wear away” (dia, “through,” tribo, “to rub”), when used of time, “to spend or pass time, to stay,” is found twice in John’s Gospel, Joh 3:22<\/span> and Joh 11:54<\/span>, RV “tarried,” instead of “continued;” elsewhere only in the Acts, eight times, Act 12:19<\/span>; Act 14:3<\/span>, Act 14:28<\/span>; Act 15:35<\/span>; Act 16:12<\/span>; Act 20:6<\/span>; Act 25:6<\/span>, Act 25:14<\/span>. See CONTINUE, TARRY. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n used once in the sense of “abiding,” Mat 17:22<\/span>, frequently denotes “to behave oneself, to live a certain manner of life;” here the most reliable mss. have sustrephomai, “to travel about.” See BEHAVE, CONVERSATION, LIVE, OVERTHROW, PASS, RETURN. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n “to lodge,” originally “to lodge in the aule, or courtyard,” is said of shepherds and flocks; hence, to pass the night in the open air, as did the Lord, Luk 21:37<\/span>; “to lodge in a house,” as of His visit to Bethany, Mat 21:17<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n “to lodge in a fold in a field” (agros, “a field,” aule, “a fold”), is used in Luk 2:8<\/span>. See LODGE. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n “to stand, to make to stand,” is rendered “abode” in Joh 8:44<\/span>, AV; “continue,” in Act 26:22<\/span>. In these places the RV corrects to “stood” and “stand.” This word is suggestive of fidelity and stability. It is rendered “lay…to the charge” in Act 7:60<\/span>. So in Mat 20:12<\/span>. Cp., the English idiom “did one hour;” in Rev 13:5<\/span> “continue” is perhaps the best rendering.
