He studied at Edinburgh Academy, and graduated from Exeter Hall, Oxford, in 1836. In 1841 he was made vice-principal of St. Bee&#8217;s College, Cumberland; in 1848 incumbent of All-Saints&#8217; Church, Derby; in 1849 was consecrated the first bishop of St. Rupert&#8217;s Land, but resigned that see on being appointed vicar of Clifton in 1864; in 1866 he was made chancellor of St. Paul&#8217;s Cathedral, and died in London, November 5, 1885.
