He was employed by Nicholas V to paint historical subjects in his chapel. He was called by some the Angelic Painter, because he never took up his pencil without a prayer. He always painted religious subjects. He was offered the archbishopric of Florence as a reward for his talents by Nicholas V, but refused the honor.
