Arrows are sometimes figuratively put for lightning (<span class='bible'>Deut. 32:23<\/span>, <span class='bible'>42<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Ps. 7:13<\/span>; <span class='bible'>18:14<\/span>; <span class='bible'>144:6<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Zech. 9:14<\/span>). They were used in war as well as in the chase (<span class='bible'>Gen. 27:3<\/span>; <span class='bible'>49:23<\/span>). They were also used in divination (<span class='bible'>Ezek. 21:21<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>The word is frequently employed as a symbol of calamity or disease inflicted by God (<span class='bible'>Job 6:4<\/span>; <span class='bible'>34:6<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Ps. 38:2<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deut. 32:23<\/span>. We know not of what wood the arrows of the Israelites were made. Apparently the arrows were sometimes poisoned. Job 6:4; Psa 120:4; Num 24:8; Deu 32:23, etc. Arrows are used metaphorically for the judgements of God, Psa 38:2; Psa 45:5: also for anything sharp and painful, as smiting by the tongue.
