He studied at Heidelberg, was in 1823 professor of the gymnasium in Frankfort-on-the-Main, in 1842 professor of history at Bonn, and in 1854 at Vienna. He died April 25, 1882. He is best known as the editor of Allgemeines Kirchenlexikon (1846-50, 4 volumes), to which he contributed largely.
