The name is doubtless derived from the goddess Ashtoreth or Astarte, whose images were adored there under the figure of a female with a crescent, or horns. It was in the limits of the half tribe of Manasseh, Jos 13:31 ; and was a Levitical city, 1Ch 6:71 .
