He graduated from Brown University in 1852; from Andover Theological Seminary in 1856; the same year was ordained pastor at Grantville, Massachusetts; in 1864: became the colleague of Brown  Emerson, D.D., in the South Church, Salem, and after his death its sole pastor. He was a corporate member of the A.B.C.F.M. from 1873, and member of its prudential committee from 1886. He was the first president of the Essex Congregational Club.
