1. (Sept. v. r. .) A city in the southern part of Judah, mentioned in connection with Beersheba and lim (Jos 15:29), apparently the same elsewhere called BALAH (Jos 19:3), also BILHAH, and assigned to Simeon (1Ch 4:29). In the firstnamed passage it forms part of the preceding name Bizjothjah-Bnalah. SEE BIZJOTHJAH.<\/p>\n
2. (Sept. v. r. , but omits in 1 Chronicles) A city on the northern border of Judah (Jos 15:10), better known as KIRJATH- JEARIM (q.v.) (Jos 15:9; 1Ch 13:6), otherwise called BAALE OF JUDAH (2Sa 6:2). In Jos 15:60; Jos 18:14, it is called KIRJATH-BAAL. From the expression Baalah, which is Kirjath- jearim (comp. Jebusi, which is Jerusalem, 18:28), it would seem as if Baalah were the earlier or Canaanite appellation of the place.<\/p>\n
3. (Sept. v. r. , etc.) A mountain () on the N.W. boundary of Judah, between Shicron and Jabneel (Jos 15:11), usually regarded as the same with Mount Jearim (Jos 15:10), from the neighboring Kirjath-baal; but erroneously (see Keil, Comment. in loc.), for the direction in the text requires a location more westerly, apparently at the modern Tell Hermes (Van de Velde, Map). (15:9; 1 Chr. 13:6<\/span>), now Kuriet-el-Enab, or as some think, ‘Erma.<\/p>\n (3.<\/strong>) A mountain on the north-western boundary of Judah and Dan (Josh. 15:11<\/span>).<\/p>\n BAALAH (the Canaanite designation) equates to KIRJATH JEARIM, or KIRJATH BAAL, now Kuriat el E’nab (Jos 15:9-10-11 (“Mount Baal”), 60); supposed by many to be Emmaus. in 2Sa 6:2 called BAALE of Judah; Jos 19:3 Balah; 1Ch 4:29 BILHAH.<\/p>\n baa-la , baalah; possessor, mistress): three occurrences of this name:<\/p>\n (1) = KIRIATH-JEARIM (which see) (Jos 15:9, Jos 15:10; 1Ch 13:6).<\/p>\n (2) A city in the Negeb of Judah (Jos 15:29). In Jos 19:3 Balah and in 1Ch 4:29 Bilhah; perhaps also Boaloth of Jos 15:24. The site is unknown; but see PEF, III, 26.<\/p>\n (3) Mount Baalah (Jos 15:11), a mountain ridge between Shikkeron (Ekron) and Jabnoel unless, as seems probable, the suggestion of M. Clermont-Ganneau (Rev. Crit, 1897, 902) is correct that for , har ( = mount), we should read , nahar (river). In this case the border in question would be the Nahr rubn.
