He acquired a good common- school education; learned the blacksmith&#8217;s trade; was licensed to preach in 1824, and ordained in 1825. He labored in Livermore, Hallowell, Canton, Auburn, and Turner, Me., in which latter place he preached for twenty-five years. He died in Auburn, Jan. 24, 1876. Mr. Bates was a truly evangelical preacher; winning, impressive, clear, unaffected, and forcible; and the embodiment of kindness, gentleness, and hospitality.
