The latter had by the grant of Theodosius the right of sanctuary; and Constantine having built one at Constantinople, near the Apostles&#8217; Church, St. Hilary Damasus, and Adrian I followed his example at Rome. Paintings and mosaics adorned, them, and bishops in their.visitation enjoined their use. One at Puzzuoli still bears the namne of the Bishop&#8217;s Spring. The high priest at his inauguration (<span class='bible'>Lev. 8:6<\/span>), and on the day of atonement, was required to bathe himself (16:4, 24).
