Educated at the Jesuit college of Mongre, near Lyons, and at the seminary of Viviers, he was ordained, 1875 , and won his degree in theology and canon law  at the French seminary in Rome, 1879 . Appointed consultor of the Congregation of Bishops and Regulars, 1881,\/a&gt;, he soon became recognized as an authority on church legislation and on laws of religious communities.
