After opposing for eight years the plans of the Scottish nobles to enrich themselves with the spoils of the Church, he went to Paris in 1560 , where he acted as Scottish ambassador. In 1574  he was declared an outlaw by the Privy Council of Scotland. He was a faithful friend and adviser to Mary, Queen of Scots, and though in exile enjoyed the favor of James VI.
