He joined the Indiana Conference in 1837; faithfully preached, generally on large circuits in the middle of the state; twice was presiding elder, once a delegate to the General Conference, and only lost about six years as superannuate from the active ranks up to the time of his death, April 24, 1870. Mr. Birt possessed a pathos and moving tenderness which gave him wonderful access to the hearts of the people. He was exemplary in life.
