See COURAGE. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to speak boldly, or freely,&#8221; primarily had reference to speech (see B, below), but acquired the meaning of &#8220;being bold, or waxing bold,&#8221; <span class='bible'>1Th 2:2<\/span>; in <span class='bible'>Act 13:46<\/span>, RV, &#8220;spake out boldly&#8221; (the aorist participle here signifies &#8220;waxing bold&#8221;); <span class='bible'>Act 9:27<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Act 9:29<\/span>, &#8220;preached boldly (see also <span class='bible'>Act 18:26<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 19:8<\/span>); in <span class='bible'>Act 26:26<\/span>, &#8220;speak freely.&#8221; See FREELY. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> signifies &#8220;to dare to do, or to bear, something terrible or difficult;&#8221; hence, &#8220;to be bold, to bear onself boldly, deal boldly;&#8221; it is translated &#8220;be bold&#8221; in <span class='bible'>2Co 10:2<\/span>, as contrasted with tharreo in verse <span class='bible'>2Co 10:1<\/span>, and the first line of verse 2, &#8220;shew courage&#8221; (see No. 1, above); in <span class='bible'>2Co 10:12<\/span>, RV, &#8220;are not bold to,&#8221; for AV, &#8220;dare not make ourselves of.&#8221; Tharreo denotes confidence in one&#8217;s own powers, and has reference to character; tolmao denotes boldness in undertaking and has reference to manifestation (Thayer). See COURAGE, DARE. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> apo (intensive), with No. 3, means &#8220;to be very bold, to speak out boldly,&#8221; and is used in <span class='bible'>Rom 10:20<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> from pas, &#8220;all,&#8221; rhesis, &#8220;speech&#8221; (see A, No. 2), denotes (a), primarily, &#8220;freedom of speech, unreservedness of utterance,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Act 4:29<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Act 4:31<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 3:12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 7:4<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Phm 1:8<\/span>; or &#8220;to speak without ambiguity, plainly,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Joh 10:24<\/span>; or &#8220;without figures of speech,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Joh 16:25<\/span>; (b) &#8220;the absence of fear in speaking boldly; hence, confidence, cheerful courage, boldness, without any connection necessarily with speech;&#8221; the RV has &#8220;boldness&#8221; in the following; <span class='bible'>Act 4:13<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Eph 3:12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Ti 3:13<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 3:6<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 4:16<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 10:19<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Heb 10:35<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Jo 2:28<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Jo 3:21<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Jo 4:17<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Jo 5:14<\/span>; (c) the deportment by which one becomes conspicuous, <span class='bible'>Joh 7:4<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Joh 11:54<\/span>, acts openly, or secures publicity, <span class='bible'>Col 2:15<\/span>.
