Painter and architect ; born Vespignano, Italy , c.1266; died Florence , Italy , 8 January 1337. Successor to Cimabue, he is the acknowledged founder of modern painting. His genius revolutionized art since he inaugurated the rounded treatment of figures, dramatic movement and the expression of feeling, and the representation of actual life. In Assisi are his frescoes representing “The Life of Saint Francis” painted from 1296 to 1320 in the upper and lower church of the Basilica ; and the “Triumph of Saint Francis” which decorates the roof-groining above the high altar. Santa Croce in Florence has his “Death of Saint Francis,” and in Padua in the Capella dell’ Arena is perhaps his finest work, 36 frescoes of “The Life of Christ and the Virgin,” painted after 1306 . The “Last Judgment” above the arch of the doorway is famous. In the church of Saint John Lateran, Rome, is a fresco representing Boniface VIII announcing the Jubilee of 1300. In 1334 Giotto was appointed Master of the Works of the Cathedral of Florence and he designed the far-famed Campanile. The portrait of Dante, attributed to him, is in the Bargello of Florence in a much damaged fresco of Paradise. <\/p>\n
