{"id":29089,"date":"2022-09-28T10:27:40","date_gmt":"2022-09-28T15:27:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/break-breaker-breaking-brake\/"},"modified":"2022-09-28T10:27:40","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T15:27:40","slug":"break-breaker-breaking-brake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/break-breaker-breaking-brake\/","title":{"rendered":"Break, Breaker, Breaking, Brake"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Break, Breaker, Breaking, Brake<\/h2>\n<p>  &#8220;to break, to break off pieces,&#8221; is used of &#8220;breaking bread,&#8221; (a) of the Lord&#8217;s act in providing for people, <span class='bible'>Mat 14:19<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mat 15:36<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mar 8:6<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Mar 8:19<\/span>; (b) of the &#8220;breaking of bread&#8221; in the Lord&#8217;s Supper, <span class='bible'>Mat 26:26<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mar 14:22<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 22:19<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 20:7<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 10:16<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 11:24<\/span>; (c) of an ordinary meal, <span class='bible'>Act 2:46<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 20:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 27:35<\/span>; (d) of the Lord&#8217;s act in giving evidence of His resurrection, <span class='bible'>Luk 24:30<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> ek, &#8220;off,&#8221; and No. 1, &#8220;to break off,&#8221; is used metaphorically of branches, <span class='bible'>Rom 11:17<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Rom 11:19-20<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> kata, &#8220;down,&#8221; and No. 1, is used in <span class='bible'>Mar 6:41<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 9:16<\/span>, of Christ&#8217;s &#8220;breaking&#8221; loaves for the multitudes. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to loosen,&#8221; especially by way of deliverance, sometimes has the meaning of &#8220;breaking, destructively,&#8221; e.g., of &#8220;breaking&#8221; commandments, not only infringing them, but loosing the force of them, rendering them not binding, <span class='bible'>Mat 5:19<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Joh 5:18<\/span>; of &#8220;breaking&#8221; the Law of Moses, <span class='bible'>Joh 7:23<\/span>; Scripture, <span class='bible'>Joh 10:35<\/span>; of the &#8220;breaking up&#8221; of a ship, <span class='bible'>Act 27:41<\/span>; of the &#8220;breaking down&#8221; of the middle wall of partition, <span class='bible'>Eph 2:14<\/span>; of the marriage tie, <span class='bible'>1Co 7:27<\/span>. See DESTROY, DISSOLVE, LOOSE, MELT, PUT, Note (5), UNLOOSE. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> lit., &#8220;to rub together,&#8221; and so &#8220;to shatter, shiver, break in pieces by crushing,&#8221; is said of the bruising of a reed, <span class='bible'>Mat 12:20<\/span> (No. 9 is used in the next clause); the &#8220;breaking&#8221; of fetters in pieces, <span class='bible'>Mar 5:4<\/span>; the &#8220;breaking&#8221; of an alabaster cruse, <span class='bible'>Mar 14:3<\/span>; an earthenware vessel, <span class='bible'>Rev 2:27<\/span>; of the physical bruising of a person possessed by a demon, <span class='bible'>Luk 9:39<\/span>; concerning Christ, &#8220;a bone of Him shall not be broken,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Joh 19:36<\/span>; metaphorically of the crushed condition of a &#8220;broken-hearted&#8221; person, <span class='bible'>Luk 4:18<\/span> (AV only); of the eventual crushing of Satan, <span class='bible'>Rom 16:20<\/span>. This verb is frequent in the Sept. in the Passive Voice, e.g., <span class='bible'>Psa 51:17<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Isa 57:15<\/span>, of a contrite heart, perhaps a figure of stones made smooth by being rubbed together in streams. Cp. suntrimma, &#8220;destruction.&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to tear, rend, as of garments, etc.,&#8221; is translated &#8220;break&#8221; in the AV, of <span class='bible'>Mat 9:17<\/span>, of wine-skins (RV, &#8220;burst&#8221;); as in <span class='bible'>Mar 2:22<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 5:37<\/span>.; &#8220;break forth&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Gal 4:27<\/span>. See BURST, REND, TEAR. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> dia, &#8220;through&#8221; (intensive), and No. 6, &#8220;to burst asunder, to rend, cleave,&#8221; is said of the rending of garments, <span class='bible'>Mat 26:65<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mar 14:63<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 14:14<\/span>; of the &#8220;breaking&#8221; of a net, <span class='bible'>Luk 5:6<\/span>; of fetters, <span class='bible'>Luk 8:29<\/span>. See REND. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> see BEAT, No. 8. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> kata, &#8220;down&#8221; (intensive), and No. 6, is used of the &#8220;breaking&#8221; of a bruised reed, <span class='bible'>Mat 12:20<\/span>, and of the &#8220;breaking&#8221; of the legs of those who were crucified, <span class='bible'>Joh 19:31-33<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> sun, &#8220;together&#8221; (intensive), and thlao, &#8220;to break or crush, to break in pieces, to shatter,&#8221; is used in <span class='bible'>Mat 21:44<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 20:18<\/span> of the physical effect of falling on a stone. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> sun, and thrupto, &#8220;to crush, to break small, weaken,&#8221; is used metaphorically of &#8220;breaking&#8221; one&#8217;s heart, <span class='bible'>Act 21:13<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to split, to rend open,&#8221; is said of the veil of the temple, <span class='bible'>Mat 27:51<\/span>; the rending of rocks, <span class='bible'>Mat 27:51<\/span>; the rending of the heavens, <span class='bible'>Mar 1:10<\/span>; a garment, <span class='bible'>Luk 5:36<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Joh 19:24<\/span>; a net, <span class='bible'>Joh 21:11<\/span>; in the Passive Voice, metaphorically, of being divided into factions, <span class='bible'>Act 14:4<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 23:7<\/span>. No. 13), is used of the &#8220;breaking up&#8221; of part of a roof, <span class='bible'>Mar 2:4<\/span>, and, in a vivid expression, of plucking out the eyes, <span class='bible'>Gal 4:15<\/span>.
