After graduating from Cambridge and studying for the Anglican  ministry, he became converted to Catholicity. The success of his play, &#8220;Dido,&#8221; encouraged him to continue writing, and in all he wrote about 120 farces, burlesque librettos of opera, and adaptations from the French. He was editor of &#8220;Punch,&#8221; 1880 -1906 . His editing of the valuable English &#8220;Catholic Who&#8217;s Who&#8221; contributed largely to its success.
