He was educated at the University of Coimbra. After a varied career spent mostly in exile, he returned to Lisbon, 1570 , where he published his epic poem &#8220;The Lusiads,&#8221; dedicating it to the king, for which he received a small pension. The central point of his work is the voyage and discovery of his kinsman, Vasco da Gama.
