an English Wesleyan minister, was a native of the north of Britain. He joined the Methodist Church in Nottingham, and in 1798 was sent as a missionary to Jamaica, W. and commenced preaching at Montego Bay. A bill having been passed through the local legislature forbidding ‘Protestant preaching to the natives except by the clergy of the Established Church, Mr. Campbell was sentenced to a month’s close confinement in a damp and dismal quarter of the Moranst Bay jail, where John Williams, a local preacher, had been immured for a like offence. – Campbell returned to England in 1803, and procured from the home government a disallowance of the law. He thenceforward labored in Great Britain. A paralytic stroke received on the Newcastle-under-Lyme circuit compelled him to cease travelling in 1833.
