He was abbot  of the Cistercian  Abbey  of Ford, in Devonshire. Consecrated Bishop  of Worcester, he was elected Archbishop  of Canterbury , 1180 . He preached the Third Crusade, and set out for the Holy Land, 1190 . While there he acted as vice-regent of the patriarch.
