Born on 14 May 1812 in Killough, County Down, Ireland; died 26 February 1880 in Dublin, Ireland. Ordained on 13 June 1835. Professor of ecclesiastical history at Maynooth, where he became president in 1857. He was appointed a member of the Historical Manuscript Commission in 1869, and acted as joint editor of the Report on the Carte Manuscripts in the Bodleian Library. A contributor to the Dublin Review, he also wrote articles for Chambers&#8217;s Encyclopedia and the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and translated Leibnitz&#8217;s System of Theology.
