(1682-1761) Jesuit historian, born Saint Quentin, France ; died La Fleche. He taught in Quebec for four years, and later (1720 -1723 ) explored the French colonies in America, at the request of the government. For twenty-two years he was an editor of the “Memoires de Trevoux,” a monthly journal of bibliography, history, and science. He wrote a biography of Mother Marie de l’Incarnation, and histories of Japan, San Domingo, Paraguay, and Canada . The last (Histoire et description generale de la Nouvelle France) is his most important work, and was translated by John Gilmary Shea (History of New France, New York, 6 volumes, 1866 -1872 ). <\/p>\n
