Consecrated Bishop  of Saint David&#8217;s, 1408 , he was transferred to Canterbury , 1414 . A trusted councillor of Henry V, he favored his French war policy. He energetically opposed the Lollards, but was reprimanded by Martin V for hindering the Church&#8217;s liberties and failing to procure the abolition of the statutes of Provisors and Praemunire. Chichele was a benefactor of Oxford University, where his name is perpetuated in the Chichele professorship of modern history.
