It has this meaning in <span class='bible'>Act 15:40<\/span>, of Paul&#8217;s choice of Silas. For its other meaning, &#8220;to call or name,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Joh 5:2<\/span>, see CALL. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to take,&#8221; is used in the Middle Voice only, in the sense of taking for oneself, choosing, <span class='bible'>2Th 2:13<\/span>, of a &#8220;choice&#8221; made by God (as in <span class='bible'>Deu 7:6-7<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Deu 26:18<\/span>, Sept.); in <span class='bible'>Phi 1:22<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 11:25<\/span>, of human &#8220;choice.&#8221; Its special significance is to select rather by the act of taking, than by showing preference or favor. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> akin to the verbal adjective hairetos, &#8220;that which may be taken&#8221; (see No.3), signifies &#8220;to take,&#8221; with the implication that what is taken is eligible or suitable; hence, &#8220;to choose,&#8221; by reason of this suitability, <span class='bible'>Mat 12:18<\/span>, of God&#8217;s delight in Christ as His &#8220;choosen.&#8221; It is frequent in the Sept., e.g., <span class='bible'>Gen 30:20<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Num 14:8<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Psa 25:12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Psa 119:30<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Psa 119:173<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Psa 132:13-14<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Hos 4:18<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Hag 2:23<\/span> (&#8220;he hath chosen the Canaanites&#8221;); <span class='bible'>Zec 1:17<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Zec 2:12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mal 3:17<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> see APPOINT, NO. 11. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> signifies &#8220;to choose before,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Act 10:41<\/span>, where it is used of a choice made before by God. <\/p>\n<p> Notes: (1) For procheirizo see APPOINT, No. 12. <\/p>\n<p> (2) Stratologeo, in <span class='bible'>2Ti 2:4<\/span> (AV, &#8220;chosen to be a soldier&#8221;), signifies to enroll as a soldier (RV). See SOLDIER. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> akin to A, No. 1, signifies &#8220;chosen out, select,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 22:14<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 23:35<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 16:13<\/span> (perhaps in the sense of &#8220;eminent&#8221;); <span class='bible'>Rev 17:14<\/span>.
