He early became imbued with the intelligent and pious characteristics of his parents; devoted himself to the service of God, and was put under special private instruction with the ministry in view, which. was supplemented by a course at Hoxton Academy. In 1802 he became copastor at Southampton, and in 1804 was ordained pastor at Walworth, where he was a faithful,  devoted, conscientious, and successful minister for over half a century. His last years were spent at Upminster, where he died, July-14, 1862. As a public man Mr. Clayton was well known for his .advocacy of all kinds of religious enterprises; as prompt to speak from the platform as the pulpit; delivering his addresses with a tact :and impressiveness which did equal credit to his head and heart.
