He was a local preacher in the Primitive Methodist Church; came to America in 1840; joined the Methodist Episcopal Church soon after his arrival, and in 1843 entered the Illinois Conference, in which he served the Church as an efficient minister twenty-three years, eight of them as presiding elder. He died suddenly, Sept. 17,1866. Mr. Cliffe was a good preacher, and a Christian gentleman.
