This is a stronger expression than poieo, &#8220;to do,&#8221; or prasso, &#8220;to practice&#8221; (Nos. 2 and 3). See DO, LABOR, MINISTER, TRADE, WORK. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to do, cause, etc.,&#8221; sometimes signifies &#8220;to commit, of any act, as of murder,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Mar 15:7<\/span>; sin, <span class='bible'>Joh 8:34<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 11:7<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jam 5:15<\/span>. See DO. <\/p>\n<p> Note: In <span class='bible'>1Jo 3:4<\/span>, <span class='bible'>1Jo 3:8-9<\/span>, the AV wrongly has &#8220;commit&#8221; (an impossible meaning in <span class='bible'>1Jo 3:8<\/span>); the RV rightly has &#8220;doeth,&#8221; i.e., of a continuous habit, equivalent to prasso, &#8220;to practice.&#8221; The committal of an act is not in view in that passage. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to do, work, practice,&#8221; is said of continuous action, or action not yet completed, <span class='bible'>Act 25:11<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Act 25:25<\/span>; it is rendered &#8220;practice&#8221; in the RV, for the incorrect AV &#8220;commit,&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Rom 1:32<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 2:2<\/span>. See DO, EXACT, KEEP, REQUIRE, USE. <\/p>\n<p> * (2) In the sense of delivering or entrusting something to a person. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to give over,&#8221; is often rendered by the verb &#8220;to commit,&#8221; e.g., to prison, <span class='bible'>Act 8:3<\/span>; to the grace of God, <span class='bible'>Act 14:26<\/span>; to God, <span class='bible'>1Pe 2:23<\/span>; by God to pits of darkness, <span class='bible'>2Pe 2:4<\/span>. See COMMEND, No. 2. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> signifies &#8220;to entrust, commit to,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Luk 16:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Ti 1:11<\/span>, &#8220;committed to (my) trust.&#8221; See BELIEVE. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to put, place,&#8221; signifies, in the Middle Voice, &#8220;to put for oneself, assign, place in,&#8221; <span class='bible'>2Co 5:19<\/span>, &#8220;having committed (unto us).&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> see COMMEND, No. 3, signifies &#8220;to entrust, commit to one&#8217;s charge,&#8221; e.g., in <span class='bible'>Luk 12:48<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Ti 1:18<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Ti 2:2<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Pe 4:19<\/span> (AV, &#8220;commit the keeping&#8221;). <\/p>\n<p> Notes: (1) Didomi, &#8220;to give,&#8221; is rendered &#8220;committed&#8221; in the AV of <span class='bible'>Joh 5:22<\/span> (RV, &#8220;given&#8221;). <\/p>\n<p> (2) For porneuo (&#8220;to commit fornication&#8221;) see FORNICATION. <\/p>\n<p> (3) In <span class='bible'>Rom 2:22<\/span>, hierosuleo, &#8220;to rob temples,&#8221; is so rendered in the RV, for AV, &#8220;commit sacrilege.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p> (4) In <span class='bible'>Act 27:40<\/span>, eao, &#8220;to let, leave,&#8221; is rendered in the RV, &#8220;left (the anchors) in,&#8221; for AV, &#8220;committed themselves to.&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;a putting with, a deposit&#8221; (para, &#8220;with,&#8221; tithemi, &#8220;to put&#8221;), and its longer form, parakatatheke, are found, the former in <span class='bible'>2Ti 1:12<\/span>, &#8220;that which He hath committed unto me,&#8221; RV, marg., lit., &#8220;my deposit&#8221; (perhaps, &#8220;my deposit with Him&#8221;), the latter in <span class='bible'>1Ti 6:20<\/span>, where &#8220;guard that which is committed unto thee&#8221; is, lit., &#8220;guard the deposit,&#8221; and <span class='bible'>2Ti 1:14<\/span>, &#8220;that good thing which was committed unto thee,&#8221; i.e., the good deposit; RV, marg., &#8220;the good deposit.&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> denotes &#8220;a turning over (to another), a referring of a thing to another&#8221; (epi, &#8220;over,&#8221; trepo, &#8220;to turn&#8221;), and so a committal of full powers, &#8220;a commission,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Act 26:12<\/span>. <\/p>\n<h4 align='right'><i><b>Fuente: Vine&#8217;s Dictionary of New Testament Words<\/b><\/i><\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Commit, Commission * (1) In the sense of &#8220;doing or practicing.&#8221; to work, is translated by the verb &#8220;to commit&#8221; (of committing sin), in Jam 2:9.
