He entered the Cistercian  monastery  at Villers in Belgium , 1199 , and in 1209  was chosen abbot . He held the offices of Abbot  of Clairvaux , Citeaux , and general of the order. Pope Honorius III created him cardinal , 1219 , and charged him to suppress the Albigenses  in France . From 1224 -1226  he preached a crusade in Germany . At the death of Honorius III, he refused the papacy.
