A famous casuistic problem proposed in 1701 to know whether absolution might be given to a cleric who declared that he held on certain points the sentiments of Jansenists, especially that of respectful silence on the question of fact, i.e., to say as to whether or not the propositions condemned by Innocent XII as Jansenistic are actually contained in Jansenius’ work “Augustinus.” This case was decided affirmatively by 40 noted doctors of the Sorbonne, but as this was a denial of the power of the pope to decide whether a certain book does or does not contain errors against faith, the solution was condemned by Clement XI in his Brief, “Cum nuper” (1703 ), and by the faculties of theology of Louvain, Douai, and Paris. <\/p>\n
