See DEBATE, STRIFE, VARIANCE. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> (Eng., &#8220;paroxysm&#8221;), lit., &#8220;a sharpening,&#8221; hence &#8220;a sharpening of the feeling, or action&#8221; (para, &#8220;beside,&#8221; intensive, oxus, &#8220;sharp&#8221;), denotes an incitement, a sharp contention, <span class='bible'>Act 15:39<\/span>, the effect of irritation; elsewhere in <span class='bible'>Heb 10:24<\/span>, &#8220;provoke,&#8221; unto love. See PROVOKE. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> lit., &#8220;love of strife&#8221; (phileo, &#8220;to love,&#8221; neikos, &#8220;strife&#8221;), signifies &#8220;eagerness to contend;&#8221; hence, a &#8220;contention,&#8221; said of the disciples, <span class='bible'>Luk 22:24<\/span>. B, 2. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> lit., &#8220;not fighting&#8221; (a, negative, mache, &#8220;a fight, combat, quarrel&#8221;), primarily signifying &#8220;invincible,&#8221; came to mean &#8220;not contentious,&#8221; <span class='bible'>1Ti 3:3<\/span>, RV; <span class='bible'>Tit 3:2<\/span> (AV, &#8220;not a brawler,&#8221; &#8220;no brawlers&#8221;). <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> akin to A, No. 3, is used in <span class='bible'>1Co 11:16<\/span>.
