He entered into holy orders July 2, 1664, and, April 29, 1669, was installed dean of Chichester; in 1671 was elected bishop of Oxford, and consecrated July 2; was translated to Durham, October 22, 1674; in 1686 was appointed one of the commissioners in the new ecclesiastical commission erected by king James, and held several other important offices during his life.
