a Roman Catholic divine, was born in Washington, D.C., April 5, 1824. His father was a lieutenant in the United States navy, and died when on a cruise in the Mediterranean sea when Jeremiah was young. His mother became a Catholic, and sent her son to a seminary established at Nyack-on- the-Hudson by bishop Dubois, whence he went to the Propaganda College, Rome, where he received the highest honors. In 1847 he returned to America, and was for a time stationed at the old St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Moott Street, New York city. Thence he went to a temporary church at Madison Avenue and Twentieth Street, and finally built St. Stephen’s Church, Twenty-eighth Street, of which he remained pastor until his death, January 4, 1866. Dr. Cummings was well known as an effective preacher, a popular lecturer, a graceful poet, and an elegant writer. He was the author of Italian Legends: Spiritual Progress: Hymns and Songs for Catholic Schools: The Silver Stole. He wrote and corrected many articles on Catholic subjects for the first edition of Appleton’s Cyclopedia. He was a genial gentleman, and of great popularity among all classes. See (N.Y.) Cath.
