He was educated for the bar, and was one of the coterie of brilliant writers whose articles published in the &#8220;Nation&#8221; powerfully influenced the Irish people in the middle of the 19th century. A graceful lyrist, he won a permanent place in literature by his version of the Spanish dramatic poet, Caldern. He was awarded a medal from the Spanish Royal Academy.
