The word is most probably connected with a form of plesso, &#8220;to strike,&#8221; and plege, &#8220;a blow,&#8221; suggestive of the tossing of the waves. Some would connect it with plax, &#8220;a level board,&#8221; but this is improbable, and less applicable to the general usage of the word, which commonly denotes the sea in its restless character.
