See BETTER (be). <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> denotes &#8220;to divide&#8221; (from meros, &#8220;a part:&#8221; the root mer-, indicates distribution, or measuring out, and is seen in meris, &#8220;a district&#8221;). In <span class='bible'>1Co 7:34<\/span> the perfect tense of the Passive Voice is translated &#8220;there is a difference.&#8221; Some take the verb with what precedes, with reference to the married brother, and translate &#8220;he has been divided.&#8221; See DEAL, DISTRIBUTE, DIVIDE, GIVE, PART. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> lit., &#8220;to separate throughout, to make a distinction,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Act 15:9<\/span>; RV is translated &#8220;to make to differ,&#8221; in <span class='bible'>1Co 4:7<\/span>. In <span class='bible'>Jud 1:22<\/span>, where the Middle Voice is used, the AV has &#8220;making a difference,&#8221; the RV, adopting the alternative reading, the accusative case, has &#8220;who are in doubt,&#8221; a meaning found in <span class='bible'>Mat 21:21<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mar 11:23<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 10:20<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 14:23<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jam 1:6<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Jam 2:4<\/span>. See CONTEND. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> lit. signifies &#8220;to take asunder,&#8221; from dia, &#8220;apart,&#8221; and haireo, &#8220;to take&#8221; (Eng., &#8220;diaeresis,&#8221; i.e., distinguishing two successive vowels as separate sounds); it is rendered in the AV, &#8220;diversities&#8221; in <span class='bible'>1Co 12:4<\/span>, <span class='bible'>1Co 12:6<\/span>; &#8220;differences&#8221; in <span class='bible'>1Co 12:5<\/span>; RV, &#8220;diversities,&#8221; in each place. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> signifies &#8220;a setting asunder&#8221; (dia, &#8220;asunder,&#8221; stello, &#8220;to set, place, arrange&#8221;), hence, &#8220;a distinction;&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Rom 3:22<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rom 10:12<\/span>, AV, &#8220;difference;&#8221; RV, &#8220;distinction;&#8221; in <span class='bible'>1Co 14:7<\/span> it is used of the &#8220;distinction&#8221; in musical sounds. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> akin to A, No. 1, signifies &#8220;varying in kind, different, diverse.&#8221; It is used of spiritual gifts, <span class='bible'>Rom 12:6<\/span>; of ceremonial washings, <span class='bible'>Heb 9:10<\/span> (&#8220;divers&#8221;).
