Born in 1400 in Capranica, Italy ; died  in 1458 in Rome, Italy . A Doctor of Canon  and Civil Law, 1421 , he became secretary to Martin V and was made cardinal  &#8220;in petto&#8221; by the pope, 1423  or 1426 , the first known instance of the use of this reservation. He became Bishop  of Fermo, but was refused the red hat when Martin died , 1431 . The Council of Basle upheld his claims and he was reconciled with Eugene IV, 1434 .
