Here in 1152  the papal legate convened a synod. The Irish Parliament passed in 1494 the famous &#8220;Poynings Laws.&#8221; The town was besieged by  Cromwell  in 1649  and was the scene of a massacre. It surrendered to William III after the battle of the Boyne. Saint Peter&#8217;s chapel  served as the cathedral  of the Archbishopric  of Armagh .
