He was educated at Clare Hall, Cambridge, where he took his master&#8217;s degree in 1716. In 1724 he was presented to the vicarage of St. Olave, Jewry, and to the rectory of St. Martin&#8217;s, Ironmonger&#8217;s Lane. In 1725 he obtained a prebend of Gloucester, and in 1728 was created D.D. at Cambridge. He was next promoted to the bishopric of St. David&#8217;s, and died at Gloucester in 1761. His writings are as follows: 1. A Plea for the Sacramental Text:  2. Remarks on Hume&#8217;s Essay concerning Miracles, and sermons preached on public occasions (4to):  3. Tracts on the Liberty, Spiritual and Temporal, of Protestants in England (1767, 4to):  4. Tracts on the Liberty, Spiritual and Temporal, of Subjects in England: the two last-mentioned are collections of tracts, and form one great and elaborate work, which was the principal object of the bishop&#8217;s life. They were published posthumously.
