He joined the army; was taken prisoner, but was miraculously liberated. He studied theology and was ordained priest, 1518. He founded hospitals, orphanages, and institutes for fallen women. In l532 established a religious society at Somascha for the care of orphans, poor, and sick. Canonized  1767.
