{"id":47204,"date":"2022-09-28T15:57:36","date_gmt":"2022-09-28T20:57:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/faithful-faithfully-faithless\/"},"modified":"2022-09-28T15:57:36","modified_gmt":"2022-09-28T20:57:36","slug":"faithful-faithfully-faithless","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biblia.work\/dictionaries\/faithful-faithfully-faithless\/","title":{"rendered":"Faithful, Faithfully, Faithless"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Faithful, Faithfully, Faithless<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p> a verbal adjective, akin to peitho (see FAITH), is used in two senses, (a) Passive, &#8220;faithful, to be trusted, reliable,&#8221; said of God, e.g., <span class='bible'>1Co 1:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 10:13<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Co 1:18<\/span> (AV, &#8220;true&#8221;); <span class='bible'>2Ti 2:13<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 10:23<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 11:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Pe 4:19<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Jo 1:9<\/span>; of Christ, e.g., <span class='bible'>2Th 3:3<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 2:17<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 3:2<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 1:5<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 3:14<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 19:11<\/span>; of the words of God, e.g., <span class='bible'>Act 13:34<\/span>, &#8220;sure;&#8221; <span class='bible'>1Ti 1:15<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Ti 3:1<\/span> (AV, &#8220;true&#8221;); <span class='bible'>1Ti 4:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Ti 2:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Tit 1:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Tit 3:8<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 21:5<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 22:6<\/span>; of servants of the Lord, <span class='bible'>Mat 24:45<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mat 25:21<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Mat 25:23<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 16:15<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 4:2<\/span>, <span class='bible'>1Co 4:17<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 7:25<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Eph 6:21<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Col 1:7<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Col 4:7<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Col 4:9<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Ti 1:12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Ti 3:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Ti 2:2<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Heb 3:5<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Pe 5:12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>3Jo 1:5<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 2:13<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 17:14<\/span>; of believers, <span class='bible'>Eph 1:1<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Col 1:2<\/span>; (b) Active, signifying &#8220;believing, trusting, relying,&#8221; e.g., <span class='bible'>Act 16:1<\/span> (feminine); <span class='bible'>2Co 6:15<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Gal 3:9<\/span> seems best taken in this respect, as the context lays stress upon Abraham&#8217;s &#8220;faith&#8221; in God, rather than upon his &#8220;faithfulness.&#8221; In <span class='bible'>Joh 20:27<\/span> the context requires the Active sense, as the Lord is reproaching Thomas for his want of &#8220;faith.&#8221; See No. 2. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> With regard to believers, they are spoken of sometimes in the Active sense, sometimes in the Passive, i.e., sometimes as believers, sometimes as &#8220;faithful.&#8221; See Lightfoot on Galatians, p. 155. <\/p>\n<p> Note: In <span class='bible'>3Jo 1:5<\/span> the RV has &#8220;thou doest a faithful work,&#8221; for AV, &#8220;thou doest faithfully.&#8221; The lit. rendering is &#8220;thou doest (poieo) a faithful thing, whatsoever thou workest (ergazo).&#8221; That would not do as a translation. To do a &#8220;faithful&#8221; work is to do what is worthy of a &#8220;faithful&#8221; man. The AV gives a meaning but is not exact as a translation. Westcott suggests &#8220;thou makest sure (piston) whatsoever thou workest&#8221; (i.e., it will not lose its reward). The change between poieo, &#8220;to do,&#8221; and ergazo, &#8220;to work,&#8221; must be maintained. Cp. <span class='bible'>Mat 26:10<\/span> (ergazo and ergon). <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> is used with meanings somewhat parallel to No. 1; (a) &#8220;untrustworthy&#8221; (a, negative, and No. 1), not worthy of confidence or belief, is said of things &#8220;incredible,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Act 26:8<\/span>; (b) &#8220;unbelieving, distrustful,&#8221; used as a noun, &#8220;unbeliever,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Luk 12:46<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Ti 5:8<\/span> (RV, for AV, &#8220;infidel&#8221;); in <span class='bible'>Tit 1:15<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 21:8<\/span>, &#8220;unbelieving;&#8221; &#8220;faithless&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Mat 17:17<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mar 9:19<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 9:41<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Joh 20:27<\/span>. The word is most frequent in 1 and 2 Corinthians. See BELIEVE, INCREDIBLE, INFIDEL, UNBELIEVER, UNFAITHFUL.
