The &#8220;fall&#8221; would be irretrievable, cp. (a); such a lapse as Peter&#8217;s is not in view. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> primarily &#8220;a false step, a blunder&#8221; (para, &#8220;aside,&#8221; pipto, &#8220;to fall&#8221;), then &#8220;a lapse from uprightness, a sin, a moral trespass, misdeed,&#8221; is translated &#8220;fall&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Rom 11:11-12<\/span>, of the sin and &#8220;downfall&#8221; of Israel in their refusal to acknowledge God&#8217;s claims and His Christ; by reason of this the offer of salvation was made to Gentiles; cp. ptaio, &#8220;to stumble,&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Rom 11:11<\/span>. See FAULT, OFFENSE, SIN, TRESPASS. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;a defection, revolt, apostasy,&#8221; is used in the NT of religious apostasy; in <span class='bible'>Act 21:21<\/span>, it is translated &#8220;to forsake,&#8221; lit., &#8220;thou teachest apostasy from Moses.&#8221; In <span class='bible'>2Th 2:3<\/span> &#8220;the falling away&#8221; signifies apostasy from the faith. In papyri documents it is used politically of rebels. Note: For &#8220;mighty fall,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Rev 18:21<\/span>, RV, see VIOLENCE. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to fall,&#8221; is used (a) of descent, to &#8220;fall&#8221; down from, e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 10:29<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mat 13:4<\/span>; (b) of a lot, <span class='bible'>Act 1:26<\/span>; (c) of &#8220;falling&#8221; under judgment, <span class='bible'>Jam 5:12<\/span> (cp. <span class='bible'>Rev 18:2<\/span>, RV); (d) of persons in the act of prostration, to prostrate oneself, e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 17:6<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Joh 18:6<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 1:17<\/span>; in homage and workship, e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 2:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mar 5:22<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 5:14<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 19:4<\/span>; (e) of things, &#8220;falling&#8221; into ruin, or failing, e.g., <span class='bible'>Mat 7:25<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 16:17<\/span>, RV, &#8220;fall,&#8221; for AV, &#8220;fail;&#8221; <span class='bible'>Heb 11:30<\/span>; (f) of &#8220;falling&#8221; in judgement upon persons, as of the sun&#8217;s heat, <span class='bible'>Rev 7:16<\/span>, RV, &#8220;strike,&#8221; AV, &#8220;light;&#8221; of a mist and darkness, <span class='bible'>Act 13:11<\/span> (some mss. have epipipto); (g) of persons, in &#8220;falling&#8221; morally or spiritually, <span class='bible'>Rom 14:4<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Co 10:8<\/span>, <span class='bible'>1Co 10:12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 2:5<\/span> (some mss. have No. 3 here). See FAIL, LIGHT (upon), STRIKE. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to fall from&#8221; (apo, &#8220;from&#8221;), is used in <span class='bible'>Act 9:18<\/span>, of the scales which &#8220;fell&#8221; from the eyes of Saul of Tarsus. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to fall out of&#8221; (ek, &#8220;out,&#8221; and No. 1), &#8220;is used in the NT, literally, of flowers that wither in the course of nature, <span class='bible'>Jam 1:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>1Pe 1:24<\/span>; of a ship not under control, <span class='bible'>Act 27:17<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Act 27:26<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Act 27:29<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Act 27:32<\/span>; of shackles loosed from a prisoner&#8217;s wrist, <span class='bible'>Act 12:7<\/span>; figuratively, of the Word of God (the expression of His purpose), which cannot &#8220;fall&#8221; away from the end to which it is set, <span class='bible'>Rom 9:6<\/span>; of the believer who is warned lest he &#8220;fall&#8221; away from the course in which he has been confirmed by the Word of God, <span class='bible'>2Pe 3:17<\/span>.&#8221; * [* From Notes on Galatians, by Hogg and Vine, p. 242.] So of those who seek to be justified by law, <span class='bible'>Gal 5:4<\/span>, &#8220;ye are fallen away from grace.&#8221; Some mss. have this verb in <span class='bible'>Mar 13:25<\/span>, for No. 1; so in <span class='bible'>Rev 2:5<\/span>. See CAST, EFFECT. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to fall into, or among&#8221; (en, &#8220;in,&#8221; and No. 1), is used (a) literally, <span class='bible'>Mat 12:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 6:39<\/span> (some mss. have No. 1 here); <span class='bible'>Luk 10:36<\/span>; some mss. have it in <span class='bible'>Luk 14:5<\/span>; (b) metaphorically, into condemnation, <span class='bible'>1Ti 3:6<\/span>; reproach, <span class='bible'>1Ti 3:7<\/span>; temptation and snare, <span class='bible'>1Ti 6:9<\/span>; the hands of God in judgment, <span class='bible'>Heb 10:31<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to fall upon&#8221; (epi, &#8220;upon,&#8221; and No. 1), is used (a) literally, <span class='bible'>Mar 3:10<\/span>, &#8220;pressed upon;&#8221; <span class='bible'>Act 20:10<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Act 20:37<\/span>; (b) metaphorically, of fear, <span class='bible'>Luk 1:12<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 19:17<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Rev 11:11<\/span> (No. 1, in some mss.); reproaches, <span class='bible'>Rom 15:3<\/span>; of the Holy Spirit, <span class='bible'>Act 8:16<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 10:44<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 11:15<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p> Note: Some mss. have this verb in <span class='bible'>Joh 13:25<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 10:10<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 13:11<\/span>. See PRESS. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to fall down&#8221; (kata, &#8220;down,&#8221; and No. 1), is used in <span class='bible'>Luk 8:6<\/span> (in the best mss.); <span class='bible'>Act 26:14<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 28:6<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> akin to A, No. 2, properly, &#8220;to fall in one&#8217;s way&#8221; (para, &#8220;by&#8221;), signifies &#8220;to fall away&#8221; (from adherence to the realities and facts of the faith), <span class='bible'>Heb 6:6<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to fall around&#8221; (peri, &#8220;around&#8221;), hence signifies to &#8220;fall&#8221; in with, or among, to light upon, come across, <span class='bible'>Luk 10:30<\/span>, &#8220;among (robbers);&#8221; <span class='bible'>Act 27:41<\/span>, AV, &#8220;falling into,&#8221; RV, &#8220;lighting upon,&#8221; a part of a shore; <span class='bible'>Jam 1:2<\/span>, into temptation (i.e., trials). In the Sept., <span class='bible'>Rth 2:3<\/span>; <span class='bible'>2Sa 1:6<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Pro 11:5<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to fall towards anything&#8221; (pros, &#8220;towards&#8221;), &#8220;to strike against,&#8221; is said of &#8220;wind,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Mat 7:25<\/span>; it also signifies to &#8220;fall&#8221; down at one&#8217;s feet, &#8220;fall&#8221; prostrate before, <span class='bible'>Mar 3:11<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mar 5:33<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Mar 7:25<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 5:8<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Luk 8:28<\/span>, <span class='bible'>Luk 8:47<\/span>; <span class='bible'>Act 16:29<\/span>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to come late, to be last, behind, inferior,&#8221; is translated &#8220;falleth short&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Heb 12:15<\/span>, RV, for AV, &#8220;fail,&#8221; and &#8220;fall short&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Rom 3:23<\/span>, for AV, &#8220;come short,&#8221; which, in view of the preceding &#8220;have,&#8221; is ambiguous, and might be taken as a past tense. See BEHIND. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to cast upon&#8221; (epi, &#8220;on,&#8221; ballo, &#8220;to throw&#8221;), also signifies to &#8220;fall&#8221; to one&#8217;s share, <span class='bible'>Luk 15:12<\/span>, &#8220;that falleth.&#8221; The phrase is frequently found in the papyri documents as a technical formula. See CAST, A, No. 7. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to come,&#8221; is translated &#8220;have fallen out,&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Phi 1:12<\/span>, of the issue of circumstances. See COME. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to become,&#8221; is translated &#8220;falling&#8221; (headlong) in <span class='bible'>Act 1:18<\/span>. See Note (1) below. See BECOME. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> when used intransitively, signifies &#8220;to stand off&#8221; (apo, &#8220;from,&#8221; histemi, &#8220;to stand&#8221;), &#8220;to withdraw from;&#8221; hence, &#8220;to fall away, to apostatize,&#8221; <span class='bible'>1Ti 4:1<\/span>, RV, &#8220;shall fall away,&#8221; for AV, &#8220;shall depart;&#8221; <span class='bible'>Heb 3:12<\/span>, RV, &#8220;falling away.&#8221; See DEPART, No. 20. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;to transgress, fall&#8221; (para, &#8220;away, across,&#8221; baino, &#8220;to go&#8221;), is translated &#8220;fell away&#8221; in <span class='bible'>Act 1:25<\/span>, RV, for AV, &#8220;by transgression fell.&#8221; See TRANSGRESS. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> denotes &#8220;to come (or fall) down,&#8221; <span class='bible'>Luk 22:44<\/span>; in <span class='bible'>Rev 16:21<\/span>, &#8220;cometh down,&#8221; RV. (5) In <span class='bible'>Act 27:34<\/span>, apollumi, &#8220;to perish,&#8221; is translated &#8220;shall &#8230; perish,&#8221; RV, for AV, &#8220;shall &#8230; fall.&#8221; (6) In <span class='bible'>Jud 1:24<\/span> the adjective aptaistos, &#8220;without stumbling, sure footed&#8221; (a, negative, and ptaio, &#8220;to stumble&#8221;), is translated &#8220;from stumbling,&#8221; RV, for AV, &#8220;from falling.&#8221; (7) In <span class='bible'>Act 1:18<\/span> the phrase prenes, headlong, with the aorist participle of ginomai, &#8220;to become,&#8221; &#8220;falling headlong.&#8221; lit., &#8220;having become headlong,&#8221; is used of the suicide of Judas Iscariot. Some would render the word (it is a medical term) &#8220;swollen,&#8221; (as connected with a form of the verb pimpremi, &#8220;to burn&#8221;), indicating the condition of the body of certain suicides. (8) In <span class='bible'>Act 20:9<\/span>, AV, kataphero, &#8220;to bear down,&#8221; is translated &#8220;being fallen into&#8221; (RV, &#8220;borne down&#8221;), and then &#8220;he sunk down&#8221; (RV, ditto), the first of gradual oppression, the second (the aorist tense) of momentary effect.
