As a young Jesuit he was forced into exile by the French government and was ordained in Switzerland. In 1842 he was one of those chosen to re-establish his order in Canada, where he remained till failing eyesight forced his return to France in 1862. He designed Saint Patrick&#8217;s Church, Montreal, and was the founder and architect of Saint Mary&#8217;s College.
